Thomas Madden’s work is informed by traditions of decorative metalwork, vessel making, and storytelling. Professor and section head of metalsmithing and jewelry at the College for Creative Studies (CCS) in Detroit, Madden creates structures that invite memory association and implore intimacy.

Madden’s work in pewter is a chronicle of personal discovery with a delight in the architecture, growth, and constant transformation visible in the living world that surrounds us. Madden’s work explores the dialog of interior space expanding against containment, creating visual tension that animates both structure and the space it occupies.

Madden was awarded the distinction of “Master Metalsmith 2007” by the National Ornamental Metals Museum in Memphis. His work may be viewed in public and private collections throughout the US and internationally, including the Studio Arts Center International in Florence, Italy, the Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan, the William Ford Family Collection in Detroit, the Ohio Crafts Museum, and the Toledo Museum of Art, and was featured in a video presentation for “Collecting Inspiration: Edward C. Moore at Tiffany & Co.” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2021. He is a lifetime member recipient of the Michigan Silversmiths Guild.

Madden received his MFA in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design from Bowling Green State University in 1988 and has taught at CCS since 1991.
