Marharyta Zhurunova and Bohdan Lokatyr, visiting the Eskenazi School as McKinney International Artists-in-Residence, will discuss the development of land art in Ukraine.
Speaking from the perspective of practitioners rather than theorists, Zhurunova and Lokatyr will talk about how this artistic practice appeared in the Ukrainian context, how it evolved over time, and why it continues to exist today. The talk will also explore the different forms land art has taken and why it has effectively become an umbrella term that encompasses many other meanings and practices.
Along the way they will address several questions: Who are the seasonal land artists? Who is being pursued by the terra-police? How can fog be preserved, and is it possible to move a landscape?
The artistic collaborators will present another public lecture Friday, April 17 about their own land art projects and recent site-specific and environmental works shaped by the realities of war in Ukraine.
