"/n/v/s/b/e" is an exhibition that aims to make the seemingly invisible underlying data privacy and monetization issues that persist in today’s society visible to the viewer. The overall purpose is to spread awareness of Facebook’s misuse of our data and how the company, as well as other tech firms, continue to collect, manipulate and monetize our data, unregulated by the government. Users have the right to privacy on the internet, but current regulations surrounding data privacy are broad and violations are easy to justify and workaround. In fact, there are no laws in place today solidifying a privacy standard or regulating how much or what type of data companies can collect. As a result, companies like Facebook are gathering loads of data and are selling/sharing the data with other companies without regulation. As a society, we have to be aware of Facebook’s manipulation and exploitation of our data for profit, take steps to protect our data and act together to get proper regulations in place.
My design concept was to take on a complex and undermined subject and transform it into a relevant and critical topic of discussion. The goal of my exhibition was to use an abstract aesthetic as a visual strategy while highlighting the distinct elements of data collection and monetization to create an overall experience that helps spread awareness. My use of visual metaphors throughout my posters is intended to spark curiosity, allowing the viewer to question what they are looking at, and interpret it in their own way. Creating an immersive experience for the viewer to actively ask questions and learn more is the first step in educating oneself of the hidden, dark reality we are a part of- a world ruled by data.
