The Grunwald Gallery of Art at Indiana University Bloomington partners with Surface Design Association to present "Future Tense 2026"—a national student exhibition juried by José Santiago Pérez. Since 2017, Surface Design Association (SDA) has invited students to submit work for the annual Juried Student Exhibition. The ninth iteration of this exhibition will be held at Indiana University’s Grunwald Gallery of Art in Bloomington, IN from August 25-October 31, 2026. Exhibiting artists are eligible for four awards recognizing excellence in artistic practice.

"Future Tense” celebrates the creative work of student artists, designers, and makers working with, or inspired by fiber, or textile materials, or techniques. This exhibition offers a glimpse into the future of contemporary fibers by presenting the very best work being made by students in the field today.

About the Juror

José Santiago Pérez  is an artist and educator who considers the formal and conceptual spaciousness of containers as a category of object and field of experimentation. José has presented solo and group exhibitions across the country. Features and reviews have appeared in Artforum, Atelier d’Art de France, Basketry+ Magazine, Newcity Art, Sixty Inches from Center, and in Contemporary Basketry: New Directions from Innovative Artists Worldwide. He received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is a Teaching Assistant Professor in Studio Art at the University of Pittsburgh. Residencies and awards include Regional Artist Residency at Contemporary Craft, Surf Point Foundation Artist Residency, Fiber Fellowship at Colorado College, Illinois Arts Council Agency Artist Fellowship Finalist in Craft, Lunder Institute for American Art Residential Residency, and HATCH Residency at Chicago Artists Coalition.

About the Grunwald Gallery

The Grunwald Gallery of Art in the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design presents contemporary works by professional and student artists in a special exhibition format. Exhibitions incorporate art from a variety of contemporary genres and approaches and can be experimental or traditional. The Gallery is conceived as a visual art laboratory with artists participating in the installation of their works and interaction with students and the public is an integral part of Gallery programming. The Grunwald Gallery frequently collaborates with artists, scientists, and scholars to produce exhibits that interpret visual art in a broader humanities and interdisciplinary context.

Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 12:00pm – 4:00pm, or by appointment, and is closed Sunday and Monday. All events are free and open to the public and the Grunwald Gallery is accessible to people with disabilities.
