A lecture by Kelly Bair & Kristy Balliet of BairBalliet launches their exhibition "Floor Models" in the Miller Gallery. The exhibition includes a series of unboxed and on view BairBalliet models (and drawings posing as models) that present a constellation of projects: three houses, two community centers, and a game board that puts the projects into play. Floor models are items, typically furniture or appliances, set out for display with the intention of customer engagement. Often presented together by type, floor models are meant to be viewed, compared, and tested by potential buyers.
The collection is representative of recent research on the architectural "core" and the exhibited projects are bound by their approach to core sampling. Core sampling is a BairBalliet design methodology that relies on extraction, both material and conceptual. Like a display of floor models, the exhibition presents projects with an incomplete aesthetic that are inherently migratory and meant for testing.
The "Floor Models" exhibition runs through October 25.
