“Paths Cross” is a linked body of paintings and CNC machined bas-relief panels that employ distinct materials and production to explore shared formal and spatial themes. Using processes and techniques instigated through parallel co-creation: Wilson creates vibrant and subdued compositions of layered colors to hold oppositions in tension as Filson & Rohrbacher explore digital craftsmanship by recasting the CNC router as a creative agent. Placed together, the works productively recast hand and machine—and additive and subtractive processes—in the service of complex two and three dimensional experiences for the viewer.
T. Kelly Wilson
Wilson is an Associate Professor at Indiana University and was the founding director of both the IU Center for Art+Design and the J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program in Columbus, IN. He received a Bachelor of Architecture from Auburn University and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University.
Wilson is an artist and architect, having recently been twice awarded the Paul Rudolph Fellowship at Auburn University. Wilson’s drawings and paintings are shown in New York City, Boston, Ma, Columbus, Oh, and Providence, RI. Wilson’s paintings and drawings have been concerned with the nature of perception by observation under the rule of transient experience of the urban and inter-tidal landscapes. Wilson’s recent work explores a new body of figurative abstraction that references human interaction.
Wilson has been an invited lecturer at many academic institutions, nationally and internationally, including the Bermuda National Gallery of Art, the Jerusalem Studio School, Israel, and the American University in Cairo. His lectures address the subjects of spatial invention within drawing and architecture, focusing upon the perceptual organization of architecture and the city.
He has held academic positions at Harvard University, Columbia University, Yale University, MIT, Auburn University, Florida University, Northeastern University and the Rhode Island School of Design.
Filson & Rohrbacher
Filson & Rohrbacher is an architecture, design, and digital fabrication workshop based in New York’s Hudson Valley founded by architects Anne Filson and Gary Rohrbacher. They produce objects, furniture, and spaces with an approach that combines machining technique, design thinking, and hands-on making. They believe, deeply, that everyone, everywhere is entitled to good design. They co-founded AtFAB, an open-source line of furniture and co-authored Make:Design for CNC. Their work has been the subject of international design exhibitions including France’s Centre National des Arts Plastiques, het Nieuwe Institute in the Netherlands, and The Design Society Museum in Shenzhen, China. Their projects have been featured by NPR, The Atlantic, The Economist, Newsweek, PBS News Hour, and have been recognized by the World Economic Forum. They both serve as faculty at the University of Kentucky’s Graduate School of Architecture.
