CJ. one Gallery is pleased to present The Dying of the Light, a solo exhibition of Ben Cowan.
Ben Cowan is a Brooklyn-based visual artist known for his paintings featuring familiar Brooklyn sights cropped, collaged, and simplified in order to capture concentrated experience that refers to the interpersonal and supernatural.
Wrought iron gates, stoops, and architecture are the background in every glance of Brooklyn’s surroundings. Cowan anthropomorphizes these ordinary and accessible objects to describe narratives in his life.
In his recent iconic “Gates” series, pairing the inviting domestic architecture with firm boundaries of decorative gates, the paintings offer both an invitation and denial. A deep space is implied, but the depth is fragile. Colors, sensuous surfaces, and familiar foliages entice, but still a longing to enter remains.
