To celebrate Valentine's Day and Black History Month, the Eskenazi School has partnered with the Eskenazi Museum of Art and the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center for a culture crawl highlighting Black creativity in various forms from the visual to the performing arts.Through guided tours of exhibitions, performances, and a reception, this event shines a light on the transformative power of Black artistry.
Event Schedule:
- Guided Tour at the Eskenazi Museum of Art
Time: 4–5PM
Stop by the museum during this hour to experience a tour of the museum’s collection, with a focus on works by Black artists. Knowledgeable guides will be on hand to answer your questions, and brochures for a self-guided tour will be available throughout the day. Learn about the cultural and historical contexts behind these masterpieces and their significance within the broader art world. - Exhibition: "YOU (probably) HAVEN’T SEEN THIS BEFORE"
Location: Grunwald Gallery, Fine Arts Building
Time: 5–6PM
Explore “YOU (probably) HAVEN’T SEEN THIS BEFORE (YPHSTB),” an exhibition celebrating historically underrepresented narratives and groundbreaking motion picture practices. This selection of 34 rarely screened archival films preserved by IU Libraries Moving Image Archive highlights the innovative work of filmmakers whose voices have often gone unheard and broaden traditional definitions of cinema. Discarded outtakes from a 1958 film produced by IU Audio-Visual Center, “Indianapolis Attacks its Slums” serve as the exhibition’s centerpiece. Documenting the devastation as well as the joy experienced by poor, mostly Black communities in Indianapolis in the late 1950s, the selection prompts closer examination of both material and community that have long been disregarded. - Performance and Reception
Location: Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center
Time: 6–7:30PM
End the day with powerful performances by Black artists followed by a reception featuring light refreshments. This is a chance to connect with others and celebrate the meaningful impact of Black art across disciplines.
If you finish touring the museum and the gallery early, join us at the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center for engaging art workshops. This event is free and open to the public.
