The Indiana University J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program presents 10 X Relay in the gallery at The Republic Building (333 2nd Street, Columbus, IN 47201).
The passing back and forth of ideas in painting is like the relay and return of the knotted patterns in the game of cat’s cradle. Each painting is a string configuration that we hold out to be received by another, or that we receive and respond to by adding something new, by proposing another knot, another net. We play cat’s cradle with ourselves, with each other, with art history. Entangled in a myriad of configurations, we start from a place that doesn’t wipe out what comes before –we make paintings of inheritances and remembering.
10 X Relay includes artists: Kylie Heidenheimer, Pinkney Herbert, Erick Johnson, Jackie Meier, Laura Newman, Pierre Obando, Jennifer Riley, Russell Roberts, Lisa Taliano, and Chuck Webster. It is a celebration and recognition of these artists’ indebtedness to each other as friends and painters. Companions in conflict and collaboration, the artists in this show are tied together by the threads of making, think and doing, entangled in a painting dialog, bound together in a knotted net of past, present, and future.
An opening reception will be held on Thursday, January 23 from 6:00–8:00 PM. There will be a panel discussion with the artists during the reception beginning at 7 PM. The exhibition will run from January 23–February 27, 2020. Artists attending the reception include: Pierre Obando, Jennifer Riley, Laura Newman, Kylie Heidenheimer, Jackie Meier, Erick Johnson, Pinkney Herbert and Lisa Taliano.
The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. This event is free and open to the public.
