Hello, Columbus: A Small Indiana Town Gives Chicago A Run For Its Architectural Legacy

Chicago is a city smug about the significance of its built environment and its elevated place in the architectural universe, which is why you have to wonder why it took the city elders so long to devise a concept like the Chicago Architecture Biennial. While the extravaganza promises another exciting edition this fall, it’s worthwhile broadening the architectural lens of the Midwest to investigate what’s going on in Columbus, Indiana, for a compelling counterpoint to the grand festivities here.

‘Lineage as Legacy’ exhibit connects fine arts students to program’s past

“Lineage as Legacy,” an exhibit of jewelry and metalwork curated and created by BFA and MFA students in the Indiana University School of Art and Design, was aptly named.

Under the direction of associate professor Nicole Jacquard, students turned a research course on the work of Alma Eikerman, founder of the jewelry-making program at IU, into an exhibit to showcase the importance of Eikerman’s dedication to those she taught through their artwork.

I started photographing in the Crestmont public housing projects on Pigeon Hill. Pigeon Hill is a larger area on a bluff overlooking the Indiana University campus, maybe a mile or so to the west, and it’s always been the area where poor people have lived—filled with shacks and bungalows. My car repair shop was on the hill.

Elizabeth Claffey receives Center's Director's Choice award

Elizabeth Claffey received 3rd Place in CENTER’s Director‘s Choice Award. Her project, Matrilinear , “is a series that addresses embodied memory and its relationship to personal, familial, and cultural identity”. At Exhibit Columbus, Students Get a Chance to Test Their Ideas in the Real World

On August 26, the inaugural exhibition of Exhibit Columbus, an annual exploration of architecture, art, design, and community, will open to the public. The exhibition will include six built structures, designed by teams from six different Midwestern universities, that investigate the built environment of Columbus and involved working closely with members of the community.
