Nine MFAs exhibit thesis work at Grunwald Gallery
Graduating MFA students in eight different areas of studio art exhibit their thesis work at the Grunwald Gallery through April 15. McKinney series guest photographer Kei Ito on working in the wake of Hiroshima
Photographer Kei Ito spoke with WFIU's Inner States about his cameraless work dealing with the legacy of the nuclear bomb. Ito was in Bloomington as a guest of the school's McKinney Visiting Artist Series, and his work is on view through July 9 in the show "Direct Contact" at the Eskenazi Museum of Art.
"Home Bound" to feature Eskenazi student and alumni work
Featuring artworks by several Eskenazi students and recent alumni, the independently curated exhibition "Home Bound" showcases diverse meditations on the experience of home. The show opens with a reception and gallery talk Thursday, March 30 at 5 p.m. at the IUB Sciences Library in the Chemistry Building C002, and is on view through May 20.
Quiñones (MFA '19) to head fibers at Cranbrook
A 2019 graduate of Eskenazi's MFA program in fibers, Joey Quiñones was named the the new Artist-in-Residence and Head of the Fiber Department at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, one of the nation's premier fibers programs. Quiñones works across a wide range of materials and explores the intricacies of queer, Afro-Latinx identity.
MFAs Atencah and Carney featured in Fourth St Garage show
Through May 13 at Bloomington's Fourth Street Garage, "Underground" features work by over 20 emerging BIPOC artists, including Eskenazi MFAs Beatrice Atencah (fibers) and Justin Carney (photography). The show is a partnership between the City of Bloomington and Indianapolis-based art collective One Drop.
Ricketts' extraordinary textile on view at Seattle Art Museum
The largest textile of its kind, Zurashi/Slipped, by Eskenazi faculty Rowland Ricketts in collaboration with Chinami Ricketts, is part of the Seattle Art Museum's exhibition "Ikat: A World of Compelling Cloth," on view through May 29, 2023. The Ricketts' weaving used 1.2 million yards of yarn.
Printmaking faculty creates new WFIU design
Listeners who pledged support to WFIU Public Radio during its most recent fund drive will spot a new design on the gift they received as thanks. Created by Tonja Torgerson, lecturer of printmaking in the Eskenazi School, the design shows two flowers commonly found in Indiana gardens sprouting from a pair of studio headphones.
Eskenazi dean is 2023 Evansville Museum show juror
Eskenazi School Founding Dean Peg Faimon served as this year's juror for the 60th Annual High School Art Show at the Evansville Museum of Arts, Science and History, on view through April 16. Faimon curated the selection of 125 artworks by students from 19 high schools.
Eskenazi's Ozsever shows River, Red at University of Southern Indiana
Eskenazi faculty Ahmed Ozsever uses photography and data visualization to reflect on ideas of permanence and transformation within the landscape. His exhibition River, Red is on view March 4 through April 15 at the University of Southern Indiana New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art, with an opening reception Saturday, March 11, from 4-6 p.m.
Comp design students help build dreams
"Toast Grabber," "Dog Feet Washer," "Sick Helper." Linton, Indiana second-graders dreamed up wild inventions and Jon Racek's Comp Design students helped bring them to life. The project picked up where the Eskenazi School's MyMachine collaboration with Bloomington elementary students left off in 2022.
