Joseph Jesse Ovalle (M.F.A. '23, Studio Art) has won the International Sculpture Center's top award for students. Ovalle was recognized for "Drain the Swamp," a high-relief sculpture that uses multiple innovative techniques to send up the familiar political bromide about Washington D.C.
Eskenazi Museum of Art announces exhibition of Jeffrey A. Wolin's photography
A retrospective exhibition of the work of celebrated photographer and longtime head of the Eskenazi School's photography area Jeffrey A. Wolin opens this fall at IU's Eskenazi Museum of Art. In his work, the 35-year faculty member has shared the stories of subjects ranging from stonecutters to Holocaust survivors, war veterans, and people experiencing homelessness.
Community to partner with Eskenazi metalsmiths for Radical Jewelry Makeover Bloomington
Radical Jewelry Makeover Bloomington will invite the community to join forces with Eskenazi metalsmiths for an alternative jewelry mining drive. Donations will be transformed by student jewelers and exhibited at the Grunwald Gallery in January as part of a world-wide sustainability campaign.
ServeDesign Center is partner on childcare provider support grant
The Eskenazi School's ServeDesign Center will partner with the Community Education Coalition to pilot a coaching and accelerator program for child care providers in the Columbus, Ind. area. Funded through a grant from the Duke Energy Foundation, the pilot will connect Eskenazi students and faculty with opportunities to design optimal learning spaces.
Silvia Acosta named McRobbie Professor in Architecture
Silvia Acosta has been named the inaugural McRobbie Bicentennial Professor in Modern Architecture at the Eskenazi School, endowed by a gift of $500,000 from IU Chancellor and past President Michael McRobbie and First Lady Laurie Burns McRobbie. Acosta’s approach to architectural practice is deeply collaborative and community based.
Where jewelry meets needle craft: Angela Caldwell at Baltimore Jewelry Center
On view at the Baltimore Jewelry Center through July 7, "Women, I Know" features the work of Eskenazi metals and jewelry faculty member Angela Caldwell. The artist deconstructs and reinterprets the quilt as wearable armor to embody the spirit of women and provide support and comfort in the face of adversity.
Comp design students bring children's dream machines to life
Eskenazi comprehensive design students led by senior lecturer Jon Racek collaborated in the second annual MyMachine USA competition to realize working prototypes of children's dream inventions. “We had better ideas working together as a group than if we would have done this all by ourselves," said Jackson, a second grader in Greene County.
B.F.A. Danielle Shum explores intersecting identities in metal
Danielle Shum "never anticipated that [her] story about a curved spine could resonate with so many people." Her brooch "Scoliosis" has won awards for the metalsmithing B.F.A. from the National Society of Arts and Letters and the Society of North American Goldsmiths, and is included in the show "We Are Here" opening June 4 at the Metal Museum in Memphis.
