"Not delicate": Professor Emeritus Barry Gealt's latest landscapes at McCalla
They are called landscapes, but more than anything, Barry Gealt's paintings seem to register how it feels to be in the landscape. "I think of myself as a realist," said Gealt, Eskenazi School professor emeritus of painting. "I can’t name you each tree in the painting, but I’m a realist in that the experience is real." A show of his newest paintings opens April 21 at University Collections at McCalla.
Senior's adaptive design proposal earns awards from IU and retail industry
An Eskenazi School Fashion Design major has been recognized by the Runway of Dreams Foundation and IU for her proposed line of clothing creating ease in dressing for individuals with disabilities. Senior Kennedy Obermeier developed the case study for Abercrombie and Fitch, where she will take a full-time technical design position after graduation.
A senior lecturer in merchandising at the Eskenazi School, Mary Embry's focus is sustainability. It's a topic her latest students are conversant in, "because they know about the challenges of dwindling resources and feel the impact of climate change largely for the first time." Expo Chicago 2023 features ceramics by Eskenazi's Malcolm Smith
Malcolm Mobutu Smith, associate professor of ceramics, is one of four artists featured in Seeing is Believing, on view at Expo Chicago April 13-16. Presented by the Wexler Gallery, the show features work by artists outside the dominant culture exploring representation of the self across mediums and genres.
M. Arch student sculptures installed at Salem's Lake Salinda
Salem Mayor Justin Green unveiled two site-specific sculptures on the Lake Salinda waterfront Tuesday, April 11. Designed by students in the Eskenazi School's Miller M. Arch program and drawing upon the area's cultural heritage, the sculptures were designed to activate the recreational area and foster economic development.
IDS features BFA Thesis Exhibition at Grunwald
Sixteen students graduating with B.F.A. degrees are exhibiting their thesis work in the Grunwald Gallery April 18-29, with an opening reception April 21 from 6-8 p.m. The IDS covered the show, which will feature work in painting, fibers, graphic design, printmaking, sculpture, and digital art.

Eskenazi's Claffey to pursue Fulbright project in Spain
Eskenazi School Associate Professor of Photography Elizabeth M. Claffey will further her inquiry into women's work in Murcia, Spain with a project funded by a Fulbright Scholar Award in the fall of 2023. Claffey will explore how women's craft-making traditions accomplish the essential yet invisible labor of articulating and strengthening social culture.
